Full list of Synod on the Family participants released

by Christopher Lamb in Rome

The Vatican today released the full list of participants at next month’s Synod on the Family in Rome.

Pope Francis appointed 45 of his own personal appointees including Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich (pictured) and retired Belgian Cardinal Godfried Danneels, both representing the more progressive wing of the Church.

Others nominated by the Pope include Cardinals Christoph Schonborn of Vienna and Timothy Dolan of New York.

Francis has also given his list a global feel by choosing cardinals from Tonga (Soane Mafi), New Zealand (John Dew) and Panama (Jose Lacunza Maestrojuán).

Seventeen lay couples and ten individual women will attend the synod as auditors including the Italian journalist Professor Lucetta Scaraffia.

A separate group will work as assistants to the special secretary of the synod including Dr Pia Matthews, a lecturer in healthcare ethics at St Mary’s University, in Twickenham, southwest London.

A total of 279 bishops and clergy will attend as voting participants with each country sending a certain number of representatives according to the size of their bishops conference.

England and Wales will be represented by Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, and the Bishop of Northampton, Peter Doyle; Ireland are sending the Archbishop of Armagh, Eamon Martin and the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin; Scotland will be represented by the Archbishop of Glasgow, Philip Tartaglia.
