Catholics more liberal than Protestants over same-sex marriage

by Sean Smith

Practising Catholics have a more liberal attitude to same-sex marriage than practising Protestants, according to a new YouGov poll.

The pollster questioned 863 Catholics and 1,707 Protestants in Great Britain who strongly agreed with the statement: “my faith is important to me”.

Exactly 50 per cent of Catholics polled said that they were in favour of same-sex marriage, with 40 per cent disagreeing. Only 45 per cent of Protestants polled supported same-sex marriage with a majority 47 per cent opposing.

Across the population in general, 66 per cent support same-sex marriage while 22 per cent oppose.

Same-sex marriage was made legal in the UK in March last year, with the exception of Northern Ireland.

In the same poll, a majority of Protestants (59 per cent) were in favour of legislation to allow euthanasia for clearly consenting terminally ill patients, while a majority of Catholics oppose legislation (42 per cent). An overwhelming majority of the general public (79 per cent) are in favour of the legalisation of euthanasia.

On the issue of abortion however, both Protestants and Catholics believe there should be more restrictions in place (69 per cent of Catholics and 56 per cent of Protestants). Only 29 per cent of the general public said that abortion should be more restricted.
