One of the first Catholic churches to be built in Scotland after the Reformation has reopened after a long refurbishment.
Bishop Hugh Gilbert of Aberdeen was principal celebrant at a Mass to mark the re-opening of St Gregory's, Preshome, near Banff in Aberdeenshire.
St Gregory's, which dates from 1788, has an elaborate Italian Baroque façade and a sanctuary designed in the 1890s by Peter Paul Pugin.
Bishop Hugh described the church as “flamboyant on the inside as well as on the outside; confident in flagging up its Catholicity”.
An older church in the parish, St Ninian’s, was designed to look like a cotter's sheepcote, its windows stuffed with straw during Mass so no glimmer of light could attract unwelcome attention.
