Glasgow medic to head Scots College

A former trainee surgeon has been appointed the next Rector of the Pontifical Scots College in Rome, the Vatican announced on Wednesday.

Originally from Paisley, Fr Daniel Fitzpatrick, 47, was called to his vocation after qualifying as a doctor at Glasgow University in 1990. He began his priestly formation at the Scots College in 1995, and worked for 12 years in parishes in Scotland. In 2012 he was appointed Vice-Rector at the Scots College.

He said: "I have been greatly blessed all my priestly life and pray that I will be able to guide our men through their years for formation to ordination and look forward to welcoming the new men that God calls through the prayers of so many to serve in his Church as priests.”

Archbishop Tartaglia, President of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland, said: "As a former Rector of the Scots College myself, I wish him every success and blessing in his new and important responsibilities."
