Church of England names fifth woman bishop

Ruth Worsley is to become the Church of England’s fourth woman bishop after being named the Bishop of Taunton in the Diocese of Bath and Wells.

Ven Ruth Worsley, who is currently Archdeacon of Wiltshire and previously worked as a priest in Nottingham, said she was surprised and “amused” by the appointment, which was announced on Tuesday.

“I grew up in a non-conformist church where women held no roles of leadership,” she said. “I am delighted to be heading to Somerset to join the diocesan team in this wonderful part of the world, moving ‘next door’ as it were. It will be a great privilege to meet and serve everyone who lives and works in the county.”

She will be installed at Wells Cathedral later this year.

Her appointment follows that of Libby Lane as Bishop of Stockport, Alison White as Bishop of Hull, Rachel Treweek as Bishop of Gloucester and Sarah Mullally as Bishop of Crediton. The Church of England’s General Synod last November voted to allow women to be ordained as bishops.
