Environment charities to march in Rome to welcome Laudato si'

A coalition of leading environmental charities will welcome Pope Francis’ encyclical letter on the need to care for the environment with a rally in Rome on Sunday.

The encyclical Laudato si, which the Vatican published last week, calls for a total rethink of man’s relationship to the natural world.

The climate coalition One Earth One Family, in Italian Una Terra Una Famiglia, has brought together organisations including Greenpeace Italy and WWF to urge heads of governments to agree on legally binding targets for combating climate change when they meet at a UN conference in Paris later this year.

The march is supported by Filipino Cardinal Luis Tagle, president of the Caritas global network of Catholic charities; the US-based coalition Catholic Climate Covenant; and secular charities. It will start at 10am on Sunday at Piazza Farnese, in the centre of Rome, and will arrive at St Peter’s Square in time for the Angelus prayer.
