Libby Lane, the first woman bishop in the Church of England, was installed at Chester Cathedral on Sunday.
The ceremony, which coincided with International Women’s Day, took place in front of 1,900 people.
During the service of choral evensong Bishop Lane said she continued to feel deeply honoured by the calling, adding that the installation felt like a “homecoming”.
She acknowledged that “expectations are high”.
Bishop Lane was consecrated at York Minster in January but began her formal ministry yesterday.
