India's PM vows to uphold freedom of religion

Narendra ModiEnding months of his silence on anti-Christian violence and propaganda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week made a categorical assurance of security and freedom of religion to India’s embattled minorities.

“My Government will ensure complete freedom of faith,” promised Mr Modi on Tuesday while presiding over the celebrations in New Delhi organised by the Syro Malabar Church to mark twin canonisations last November of Chavara Elias Kuriakose and Sr Euhphrasi Eluvnatingal.

"My Government will not allow any religious group, belonging to the majority or the minority, to incite hatred against others, overtly or covertly," Mr Modi told the gathering of over 1,000 Catholics at India’s premier convention centre in New Delhi. The celebration was led by Syro Malabar Church Cardinal George Alencherry.

"We cannot accept violence against any religion on any pretext and I strongly condemn such violence. My Government will act strongly in this regard," Mr Modi reiterated, responding to a recent spate of anti-Christian violence especially in the capital itself with five Catholic churches vandalised in New Delhi since December.

Modi's Hindu nationalist Government suffered its first major setback last Tuesday with the landslide victory in Delhi assembly elections of Shri Arvind Kejriwal of the anti-corruption Aam Aadmi Party, which won 67 out of 70 seats.
