Mozart and daily Mass: Pope Emeritus' mind still ‘formidable’

The Pope Emeritus’ mind is “formidable” shape, two years after his resignation as Pope, even if "his legs give him a few problems" according to his personal secretary.

Archbishop Georg Gänswein said that the 88-year-old Benedict XVI, who has retired to the Mater Ecclesiae monastery in the grounds of the Vatican, sticks to a methodical daily routine that sees him wake at 7.45am for Mass then spend the day reading, writing and watching the news.

He has recently resumed playing the piano. “Mostly Mozart but also other pieces that come into his mind and which he plays from memory," Archbishop Gänswein explained.

The archbishop added that the Pope Emeritus, whose resignation two years ago this week shocked the world, walks in the Vatican Gardens although “sometimes his legs give him a few problems”.

“The head is still functioning very well, his mind is formidable," he told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
