RE chairman warns of historic threat to subject


Religious Education is under greater threat than ever before, the chairman of the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education (NATRE) has warned.

Ed Pawson told NATRE’s sold-out inaugural annual conference in London on Saturday that there was a serious shortage of RE teachers at a time when “good religious education has never been more needed” to help combat radicalisation.

He called on the Government to provide training bursaries to improve recruitment and said that the subject needed more resources.

He also warned that a proposed change to the RE syllabus which would require pupils to study two religions at GCSE would pose a challenge for teachers.
