Ice church opens in Romanian mountains

A church made entirely from ice has opened in the mountains in central Romania.

The small church, built from blocks of ice cut from a frozen lake, stands at an altitude of 2000 metres at the Balea Lac resort in the Faragas mountains near Transylvania.

A joint blessing ceremony was held yesterday by priests from all the Christian denominations in Romania. The church, which contains a depiction of the Last Supper carved into one ice wall and is lit by white candles and fairy lights, was packed for the event.

It will be used for services including weddings and baptisms for as long as the cold weather lasts.
