Catholic politician to join Jesuit Refugee Service

Sarah Teather is to join the Jesuit Refugee Service after the General Election in May.

Ms Teather, a Catholic who is Liberal Democrat MP for Brent Central, will join the JRS as an advocacy adviser in June and will focus on provision of education for refugee children in the Middle East and South Sudan.

The former children’s minister, a leading voice on the left of the party, announced her resignation from politics in 2013 and said that she could no longer support her party’s policies on immigration and welfare.

As minister for children and families she negotiated the end of detention of children in the immigration system. Currently chairwoman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on refugees, she is overseeing a cross-party inquiry into immigration detention.

In a statement Ms Teather said that she encountered the JRS over the course of her campaigns around immigration and had been “hugely impressed” by them.

“I'm delighted to have an opportunity to be able to use the skills and experience I have gained in Parliament to work directly with refugee,” she said.
