Almost two-thirds of voters in Croatia yesterday voted in favour of asking their Government to recognise marriage in the country’s constitution as the union of one man and one woman.
Some 65.8 per cent of those who took part in the referendum voted in favour, with 33.5 per cent against. The Church urged Catholics to vote “yes” in yesterday’s poll.
A government spokesperson confirmed that the constitution would now have to be changed accordingly.
Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic appeared to distance himself from the results. He said: “This will be the last time that a majority takes away the rights of a minority.” The Government has pledged to push forward proposals to give greater rights to same-sex couples.
A petition this summer calling for the referendum was signed by 750,000 people – a fifth of the population – and had been backed by church leaders.
