Francis pays tribute to ‘martyrdom of mothers’

Pope Francis paid tribute to mothers this morning, warning that their experiences are often ignored, even in the Church.

Speaking at the General Audience in Rome he called mothers “an antidote to the spread of self-centredness, a decline in openness, generosity and concern for others”.

Without them society would be “inhuman”, the Pope added, and recognised their role teaching children about faith.

But her warned: "Not even the Christian community values them properly, despite the eminent example of the Mother of Jesus.”

He also spoke of a “martyrdom of mothers”, a phrase coined by Archbishop Oscar Romero, the former archbishop of El Salvador who was shot dead while saying Mass in 1980 after speaking out against social injustices.

After the audience circus performers and a dancing dog put on a display for Pope Francis. In thanking them he said that the world was too focused on doing and needed more beauty.
