Islamic State blows up Catholic church in Iraq

Islamic State militants looted and blew up a Catholic church in Mosul over Christmas.

Terrorists planted bombs in the Church of the Virgin Mary in al-Arabi, in north Mosul and sealed the building, demolishing it the next day. Footage of the demolition emerged on Christmas Day.

“Members of the extremist organisation cleared the Church of Virgin Mary of its contents and blew it up after few hours,” a local priest, Fr Behnam Raad, told the Kurdish newspaper Rudaw on Friday.

The last Christians in Mosul, Iraq’s second city, fled in July with little more than the clothes they were wearing, driven out by Islamist terrorists. The city is one of the most ancient centres of Christian civilisation.
