Welby's efforts to reconcile Church over gay marriage

The Archbishop of Canterbury has spoken of his efforts to reconcile the “deep disagreement” within the Church of England over gay marriage.

Archbishop Justin Welby told BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs programme on Sunday that he was reluctant to weigh in with his personal view because conversations were taking place within the Church “both globally and locally”.

He admitted to feeling some frustration at the division in the Church and acknowledged that, to those outside, reconciliation seemed impossible.

But he went on: “When I listen to people I know that I'm listening to people for whom not just the issue of sexuality but the whole way in which the Church lives and exists and reaches out to people, what it looks like to be a holy Church, is something on which they feel passionately and are deeply, deeply, deeply disagreeing," he said.

Among the tracks Archbishop Welby chose to be played on the programme were In the Jungle by The Tokens as well as music by Tavener, Beethoven, and You'll Never Walk Alone by Gerry and the Pacemakers.
