Francis names Cardinal Tauran as new camerlengo as Bertone retires

Pope Francis has named a new cardinal to the ceremonial post of camerlengo, the official responsible for running the Vatican between the death of a pope and the election of a new one. The new camerlengo is Cardinal Jean Louis Tauran, a Frenchman who is President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. Tauran replaces Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the former Secretary of State. Bertone had been camerlengo since 2007 but was expected stand down after he reached the retirement age of 80 on 2 December. Cardinal Tauran, who suffers from Parkinson's Disease, had the memorable task of name Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope after the conclave in March 2013. Pope Francis today also named a new vice camerlengo. It is to be Cardinal Giampiero Gloder who is President of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.
