Former nuncio ‘abused five boys’

The Justice Ministry of the Dominican Republic has concluded that its former apostolic nuncio sexually abused at least five boys under the age of 15.

The Holy See recalled Archbishop Józef Wesolowski, 65, to the Vatican in August after allegations against the Pole surfaced. The five victims have presented statements, which have now been sent to the Vatican with accompanying medical reports.

The Justice Ministry also sent the Vatican a statement from a deacon, Francisco Javier Occis, who swore he had intercourse with Wesolowski, Dominican Today reported.

The Dominican authorities now need to decide whether to formally charge Wesolowski. The Vatican has said it will co-operate with any action taken against him dating to his six years on the island of Hispaniola.

Dominica is simultaneously trying to extradite Fr Wojciech Gil, who is also from Poland. The priest also faces allegations that he committed sexual offences in the Caribbean state.

Wesolowski’s wherabouts are still unknown.
