Ordinariate looking to buy former Methodist church

An group of former Anglicans in the west of England is hoping to become the first Ordinariate community in the country to buy its own church.

The members of the Torbay Ordinariate Mission have launched a £150,000 appeal to buy a redundant Methodist church that also has halls and a building that could be converted to become a presbytery to house a priest.

The community was established under the leadership of Fr David Lashbrooke, a former Anglican vicar who was received into the Church along with about 30 members of his then parish. He now leads a thriving group whose ambition is to have its own church, and the closure of the Chelston Methodist church in Torquay has opened up this possibility.

“In a very moving final service the Methodist minister passed on a light from a candle to express his hope that we might be able to keep the Christian flame burning on this site,” said Fr Lashbrooke.
