Chairman of governors resigns at Jesuit-run Heythrop College

The chairman of governors at the Jesuit-run Heythrop College in London has resigned.

The college, which specialises in theology and philosophy and is part of the University of London, said in a statement today: "The chair of governors, Mr Bill Moyes, has decided to resign as chair of the governing body. Mr Jeremy Heap, the vice chair, is now the acting chair and thanked Bill for his commitment and hard work to the College and its future over the past two years as chair and three years as a governor.

“Mr Heap will remain as acting chair until the work of the search committee is complete and the governing body has appointed a new chair. The reason for Mr Moyes' departure is not related to the future direction of the college."

Heythrop is in talks with another Catholic higher education institution, St Mary’s University in Twickenham, about a possible “strategic partnership”. It is not clear whether the discussions will lead to a complete merger or whether some independence of the institutions will be retained.

Heythrop has been struggling with a budget shortfall and a declining number of students. It is located on a prime site in Kensington, west London, and it is understood that any partnership would mean Heythrop retaining its presence there.
