Jefferts Schori: Welby ‘could postpone Lambeth Conference’

The head of The Episcopal Church (TEC) in the US, Katharine Jefferts Schori, has said suggested that Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby could postpone the ten-yearly Lambeth Conference of Anglican bishops to allow more time to repair divisions over the issue of homosexuality.

Bishop Jefferts Schori, told a House of Bishops meeting in Taipei it “was very clear that he is not going to call a Lambeth until he is reasonably certain that the vast majority of bishops would attend”.

Four Anglican primates and many other bishops boycotted the event in 2008 over TEC’s acceptance of openly gay clergy, notably Gene Robinson, who was installed as bishop of New Hampshire in 2004.

The next Lambeth conference would need to be preceded by a primates meeting which the vast majority of primates attended, she said. “I think we are looking at 2019, more likely 2020, before a Lambeth Conference,” she added.

Lambeth Palace declined to comment on Dr Jefferts Schori's remarks.
