Brighton parish launches urgent appeal for bone marrow donor

A Catholic parish in Brighton has issued an urgent plea for a bone marrow donor who could enable a young mother in their congregation to have an essential bone marrow transplant.

St Mary’s, Preston Park, is appealing for potential donors to come forward to help mother-of-two Nikki Braterman, 45, who is severely ill with acute myeloid leukaemia.

Mrs Braterman has a rare genetic make-up, being Irish-European and Burmese. Her disease has a rare cytogenetic abnormality called the 10:11 translocation, which put her at a high risk of relapse following chemotherapy. Her best hope of survival is to find a perfect match, or 10:10 genetic donor.

Anyone who has European/south-east Asian heritage – especially with a Portuguese name such as De Souza or De Castro – is urged to come forward.
