Cardinals tasked with reform complete draft constitution

Pope Francis’ council of nine cardinal advisors has completed the first draft of a new constitution that is expected to lead to major reforms in church governance.

The group of cardinals appointed by Pope Francis to advise on bureaucratic and organisational reforms, known as the C9, met this week in the Vatican to finish the initial draft.

Vatican spokesman Fr Federico Lombardi said that the draft will have reached “an advanced stage of preparation" by the end of the next two meetings of the council in December and February, "making it possible for the Pope to proceed with further consultations."

Discussions on financial issues have now ended, he said, allowing them to tackle other responsibilities of the different pontifical councils of the curia.

Talks covered mainly two areas, family life and the plight of migrants, Fr Lombardi wrote in a statement.

One area of "focus" was "the laity and the family" he said, a broad area encompassing "the role of women in society and the Church, youth, childhood, or matters related to lay associations and movements and so on."

The second topic combined the issues of "justice and peace, charity, migrants and refugees, health, and the protection of life and ecology, especially human ecology," he said.
