Islamists have murdered 2,500 Catholics in one Nigerian diocese

Thousands of Catholics have been slaughtered in a diocese in north-eastern Nigeria by the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram, its bishop has said.

Bishop Oliver Dashe Doeme, from the diocese of Maiduguri, told Caritas Nigeria that at least 2,500 Catholics had been killed.

Families were torn apart as they fled the violence and desperate parents are still searching for their children.

Many of them – including Bishop Doeme – are now sheltering in the parish of St Teresa in Yola in Adamawa state.

Bishop Doeme denounced the Nigerian military for failing to protect its people.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has called a state of emergency in the region, which militants have claimed as an Islamic “caliphate”, or state.

Observers claim that some senior politicians in the region are colluding with and even funding Boko Haram.
