Prince of Wales expresses Iraq heartbreak

The Prince of Wales has said he is “heartbroken” by the situation in Iraq, as it was revealed that he has donated money to help suffering Christians through the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need.

In a strongly-worded letter Prince Charles told the Chaldean Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako: “You can have no idea how heartbroken I am to hear of the truly unbearable and barbaric persecution being suffered by Christians in Iraq.”

Within the typed letter the Prince had personally underlined the word “profound” in pen when offering his prayers and profound sympathy, adding that it felt “hopelessly inadequate”.

“Diabolic evil” had wrought terrible suffering in the region, he said, adding that he hoped “peace would return to the cradle of civilization.”

Responding yesterday from Iraq the Patriarch thanked Prince Charles for his words and said he was moved by the gesture.

“We ask your Highness to encourage the international community to preserve the lives and the dignity of the huge number of people affected by this disaster.”

In an article in this week’s Tablet headlined “Papal adviser likens attacks of Iraqi Christians to the start of the Holocaust” we stated that ACN released the letter from The Prince of Wales, but that is not the case and the letters came into the public domain by other means.
