Chemin Neuf takes over abbey in Plymouth Diocese


The French Catholic community Chemin Neuf has further expanded its presence in England by taking over an abbey in the Diocese of Plymouth.

The ecumenical group, which established a base at Lambeth Palace in London at the request of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Last week it took over from a small and ageing community of Carmelites at Sclerder Abbey near Looe in Cornwall.

Welcoming the community Bishop of Plymouth Mark O’Toole anticipated the gifts that the movement had to offer the Diocese and the English Church.

“Your presence manifests an important gift for the New Evangelisation with the energy and vitality which the newer ecclesial communities so often bring to the Church,” he said.
