Baroness Warsi: PM should consider Iraq intervention

Baroness (Sayeeda) Warsi called for David Cameron to “seriously consider” authorising targeted military action to save the lives of religious minorities driven from their homes by jihadists in northern Iraq.

Baroness Warsi, who resigned her government ministerial roles this month over what she called the Government's "morally indefensible" approach to the conflict in Gaza, said she was “not advocating boots on the ground” but said Britain should offer the US “whatever support is necessary” to the thousands of displaced Christians and Yazidis.

The Muslim Conservative peer, who marched against the 2003 allied invasion of Iraq approved by Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair, said Britain had a duty to protect the displaced.

Lady Warsi said that during her tenure as foreign office minister she strove to get religious freedom recognised as a priority but met resistance internally and found an unwillingness to discuss religious matters. Alongside her foreign office role, she was also Minister for Faith and Communities. “Religious persecution should serve as an early warning sign that things are going wrong,” she said. And referring to the Islamic State’s atrocities she added: “We should have seen this current crisis coming.”
