Your editorial (“End the war on welfare”, 29 April) is a stark challenge for the Churches to wake from their slumber and be more proactive in defending the rights of the poor and homeless in the run- up to the general election.
Everywhere, and every day, we are confronted on our streets with the scandal of our fellow human beings, who are just about surviving, never mind just about managing.
With this glaring injustice on our doorstep would it not be possible for the Churches to make a pre-election declaration in relation to the welfare rights of the poor? It could also clearly outline the responsibility and duty of care that all true Christians have towards those who are forced to flee from war and oppression. Our response to the refugee crisis, on the part of both political and church leadership in this country, is pitiful.
