Mrs May’s challenge
Your editorial on the upcoming general election (“Prime Minister May puts herself to the test”, 22 April) claims the challenges “undoubtedly favour democracy itself … an election should pull things together”.
It will do no such thing. The Conservatives have been hopelessly divided over Europe for decades and three prime ministers have lost their heads over it. The referendum was a con by the Tories to ask the electorate to heal their divisions, as if the likes of Daily Mail readers knew more about the implications than MPs and their legion of advisers. The divisions continue while any opposition is weak and ineffectual.
The Conservative Party wants to claim back sovereignty from Europe, but just doesn’t get it. Theresa May had to be dragged through the courts to establish the basic principle that MPs had a right to vote on her non-existent plans. Now we have the likes of Nadhim Zahawi, MP, writing that opposing political parties are doing so “in the interests of political game-playing” while the Daily Mail feeds on this trash by branding any opponents as “saboteurs”.
