As someone who worked in Cafod’s HIV team for 18 years I, too, was alarmed at the 2014 decision to dissolve this team and the HIV advisory group (News from Britain and Ireland, 25 March). I, too, raised my concerns with Cafod’s director and bishop chair, to no avail.
In 1986, Cafod declared that HIV was not solely a health issue but also a development concern affecting all development initiatives. A year later Cafod appointed its first HIV-specific post-holder, Sr Maura O’Donohue. It is bitterly poignant that the thirtieth anniversary of this prophetic decision is marked by dissolving these posts and advisory group.
