Reflecting on the end of the Year of Faith, I was struck by the enormity of the challenge of preaching the Gospel when I heard these two anecdotes from my family in Australia. The first came from my sister who is a pre-school teacher and told of her co-director who was teaching her group of children some Christmas songs. When she introduced singing the carol “Little Baby Jesus” one child called out, “That’s a swear word.” Then all the children came on board, “That’s a swear word.” Not one child piped up to the contrary. The second situation involved my elderly mother who is in care and has a photo of Pope Francis on her bedside table.
