Canon Matthew Hayes (Letters, 16 November) quotes the direction in Canon 351 of the new Code of Canon Law that “men who have been ordained at least into the order of presbyterate” “may be appointed cardinal” to prove that women cannot wear red hats. While it is true that women are not yet ordained into the order of presbyterate, as the new translation of the Creed makes clear, by “men” the Catholic Church means “men and women”.Pamela Perry, S
