Theologians and bishops
It is sad and disheartening to read Brendan Walsh’s article on the sharpened tensions between the academy and the hierarchy due to the demise of Heythrop College (“Heythrop’s fate: a struggle of ideas as old as the Church”, 17 September). It would be very bad for the Church if the deep hurt and anger about the decision is allowed to fester. If the last glimmer of hope fails, then it is imperative that the Jesuits and the bishops begin a process of reflection and reconciliation.
Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium reminds both the academy and the hierarchy that the service they give is part of Christ’s saving mission. One of the great things about Heythrop is its commitment to get out from behind the desk and apply learning to the practical pastoral work of evangelisation in our parishes and places of work. It is a great pity that this mission, so central to the teachings of Pope Francis, will be lost with the demise of Heythrop.
