Made in God’s image
Richard Leonard’s column on LGBTI and homosexuality (2 July) was excellent. But he writes that LGBTI persons “deserve respect, compassion and sensitivity”. Of course, everyone deserves respect, compassion and sensitivity. But very often we use the words “compassion and sensitivity” when speaking of people who are suffering from sickness or illness or who are in unfortunate circumstances, such as, for example, migrants or refugees. Jesus had compassion for those he cured or healed, and he was sensitive to their needs. But LGBTI people do not need our compassion or sensitivity in that sense. There is nothing that they need to be cured of or healed of or rescued from.
