In or Out?
The advice from the new chairman of The Catholic Union, David O'Mahony (Letters, 4 June), for Catholic voters in the forthcoming referendum is helpful. Catholics may bypass much of the noisy claim and counter-claim by placing the service of others at the heart of their personal decision. Catholicism contributes to society most visibly through education, charity, social justice, and care of the sick and elderly. This approach to life is learned and experienced by many Catholics at an early age in the rite of passage of a pilgrimage to Lourdes. Are the agencies of the British Church and the energetic lay apostolate overstretched already in their missions? Will ongoing membership of the EU impede our best efforts to serve effectively?
