Like carmody grey (Student Voice, 19 March), I have long felt uncomfortable with the effigy of the Crucifixion in our churches, and our focus on an instrument of torture as a shortcut visual sign for Christianity. This unease has increased now that I have children. Without ignoring Christ’s ordeal altogether, should the primary focus in the Holy Week liturgies not be on the Resurrection, the light and the new life, despite mankind’s shortsightedness and violent nature?
