More’s overlooked fellow martyr


 
New organisations need snappy titles, but it is to be regretted that the 1535 Society (News from Britain and Ireland, 26 October) has committed itself to promoting fuller understanding of the already well-known St Thomas More, with no mention of his fellow 1535 martyr, and fellow prisoner in the Tower, St John Fisher. If the secondary aim of the society is the restoration of the royal Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula at the Tower, it might be recalled that alongside the altar to St Thomas More it contains a fine plaque commemorating St John Fisher, dedicated jointly a decade ago by the current Bishop of London and the former Archbishop of Westminster.
