Pope Francis seems serious about enhancing the role of women in the Church. I would like to suggest that he and the Synod of Bishops consider the appointment of women to the College of Cardinals. There is no requirement that a cardinal should be a priest or a bishop. In fact a few centuries ago some laymen were appointed cardinals. If laymen can be appointed, why not lay- women? Cardinal Lehmann was recently reported as ruling out ordination of women, while saying that it was imperative “to open all other important positions there are in the Church for women”. Might I suggest that those who share my views should write to their national bishops’ conferences urging that the suggestion be at least considered at the highest levels of the Church.(The Hon.)
