When Cardinal Sarah said, “No one, not even the Pope, can destroy or change church teaching” (Cover quote, 3 October) I could not help wondering. How did he think that church teaching came to be in the first place? Church history gives us the insight into the formation of creeds, doctrines and definitions that we profess and believe and that the magisterium proclaims.
