At the Last Supper, Jesus was fully aware that the disciples present were about to betray, deny or abandon him at the very time he needed them most. This did not deter Jesus from sharing his body and blood with them. His love, understanding and compassion for them overrode his knowledge of how fallible they were. Such mercy has been sadly lacking in the Church, which has excluded so many from sharing the Eucharist and caused such pain and isolation.
