I am getting weary of seeing so much on the attitude of Jorge Bergoglio (Pope Francis) to Liberation Theology. While teaching and living with him in the Colegio Máximo in Buenos Aires, I realised that his basic attitude was gospel-formed. He was vividly aware that Jesus spoke of two commandments, love God and love your neighbour – though the two merged together. God had to be first – so the sacramental life and prayer had a priority. But of course the commandment to love and help the neighbour was vital. Bergoglio was greatly committed to this too.However, muddling or reversing these roles did not fit his thinking.
