To date I have seen little evidence that the Year of Mercy, let alone the evangelisation process meant to convey it, will reach out to and change the hearts of the people most in need of it. All I read about are empty gestures and gimmicks.The essential ingredient, the game changer, is the tried and tested type of evangelisation that once was part and parcel of the communal celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (yes, with General Absolution) introduced in the wake of the Second Vatican Council and loved as the Third Rite of that great sacrament. It was an immense loss to the Church that following two decades of untold fruitfulness this Third Rite was suppressed by Rome.
