In this Golden Jubilee year of the Latin Mass Society, it is interesting to note the vital part played by The Tablet in the genesis of that organisation. It was in 1964, when vernacular languages were replacing Latin, that The Tablet published an item written by Gillian Edwards and Ruth McQuillan of Cambridge appealing for help in a campaign to preserve the ancient Latin liturgy. As a result of that appeal, 3,346 names were collected, which were added to 1,500 names gathered following an advertisement placed in The Times by Geoffrey Houghton-Brown.The response encouraged Hugh Byrne and other supporters of the Latin Mass to call a public meeting on 24 April 1965, which was attended by 400 people.
