Elena Curti (“Conscience and the Commons”, 25 July) is less than fair to Tim Farron, the newly elected leader of the Lib Dems. In assessing him, she quotes without criticism two of Farron’s political opponents. She quotes Conservative MP Conor Burns to the effect that Farron “talks in very liberal terms – lofty, bordering sanctimonious, terms”, which is not borne out by the reports; nor is Burns’ statement true that “[Farron’s] voting record does not bear this out” – an accusation of hypocrisy. The quotation from another political opponent (a Labour MP) is only marginally less unpleasant and unfair. Farron is criticised for being too doctrinaire and inconsistent.
