Exodus from the German Church

What is the matter with German Catholics? I find it incredible that thousands of them are leaving the Church in protest at the behaviour of Bishop Tebartz-van Elst (The Church in the World, 19 October). Is their faith centred on the Bishop of Limburg or on Jesus Christ? Squandering money on luxurious living is criminal, but surely it is not as serious as, say, abusing minors? Why can’t German Catholics try to help reform the Church from within instead of imitating the example of Martin Luther? It is also unfortunate that the German bishops are divided over this latest scandal, with Cardinal Müller criticising the media for reporting the facts. At this critical juncture in history, disunity in the Church is the last thing we need.(Dr) Joseph SefertaSutton Coldfield, West Midlands
