In contemplating British nuclear disarmament, Lord Guthrie disparagingly remarks that “We may pride ourselves in being good but it won’t help” (News from Britain and Ireland, 19 October). Far from being good, we would merely be rejoining the rest of the world, being at present among the five “bad boy” nations that habitually oppose UN proposals for a treaty to ban nuclear weapons. That we do this while currently engaged in creating a new generation of nuclear weapons, in defiance of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, must be not only immoral, but also tragically unwise.
