On the fiftieth anniversary of Nostra Aetate Edward Kessler offers us a hopeful prospect of shared mission by Jews and Christians (“Strangers No More”, 1 August). It would seem more profitable, however, to base this hope, not on a Jewish “no” to Christ but on a Christian “yes” to the Law, the Torah. It must surely be very difficult for Christians to accept, as seems to be required by Professor Pawlikowski, whom Dr Kessler quotes, that they live “in an unredeemed world”. The redemption of the world by Christ is the central article of the Christian faith. But is there any reason why Christians should not accept that the world is at least potentially redeemed by the presence in it of the Law? If the question is left open whether Jesus has
