Sacrifice of the heart


 
First, there was Sara Maitland, suggesting that taking a train rather than a plane was not a sacrifice because she enjoyed it (4 July). Then your leader (“Celibacy is not the only option”, 11 July) equates the sacrificial element of the priestly vocation with the way “celibate priests have given up the positive good of marriage for the sake of the Kingdom”.Sacrifice is more than forgoing something – whether for the sake of the Kingdom or to improve one’s physique, or any other motive. It was not for taking the knife to Isaac that Abraham was counted righteous, but for his faith. The sacrifice was in his heart.Maitland’s sacrifice was in her heart: enjoying the sacrifice did not invalidate it. I hope that a celibate priest would find much to enjoy
