Brentwood cuts

I am a Catholic in the Brentwood Diocese and in my working life I spend most of my time as a charity tax adviser (News from Britain and Ireland, 27 June). Surely there was a duty on the diocese under civil law, never mind canon law, to consider whether its expenditure represented the best way of using its funds to promote its purposes. In that context, it is not surprising that a decision to adopt another way had to be taken and unfortunately that would lead to redundancy. Sometimes the complexities of the law give no room for indulgence if the interests of the charity are to be protected.Clearly one can understand the colossal impact on the individuals concerned and has every sympathy for them, but is it wise or helpful to air private concerns in this public manner?Antony TimminsBrentwood
