One thing that can be said for Scotland’s bishops is that they never fail to disappoint (“Indian missionaries come to Scotland”, News from Britain and Ireland, 4 July). Attendance at Mass is down (presumably the takings are too), parishes are to be closed and clustered together, vocations to the priesthood are dribbling away. In any other part of life, the response would be simple – you’re the guys in charge; it’s the leadership that has let the system down. Scotland’s bishops have shown themselves lacking the vision to think in any way other than to look for answers in the same old, redundant mode: get some nuns in from abroad; recruit a few priests from India.
